How do you optimally organize a workplace to accommodate the needs of different user groups – in a limited space, moreover? LBP Engineering has taken on this task with a detailed site master plan.
As part of a comprehensive restructuring and expansion of existing production facilities, AGC Biologics – the former CMC Biologics – suddenly found themselves lacking office space. A new canteen, new labs, new processes and an overall change of building flow necessitated an agile approach to a complicated process of reorganization. To map things out, LBP Engineering proposed a site master plan.
“We thought it beneficial to our client to look at the entire project from above. Many activities had been initiated simultaneously, so by gathering them all in a site master plan, we aimed to create an overview to better assess the advantages and disadvantages of each initiative. To decode how they may individually influence AGC’s processes, work flow and working environment. The key to this is to base all data on thorough mapping and user involvement,” explains LBP project manager, Morten G. Hansen.
Through these concrete data, the site master plan was operationalized. In this process, it was vital to take a step down from the helicopter perspective and assess each initiative separately. It was also important to take on the appropriate mindset as consultant, says Morten G. Hansen:
“If the client requires something which in technically or otherwise impractical, what do we have to offer instead? The trick is to listen and to filter user needs so that essential demands are unearthed. We can’t simply say no just because our textbooks prescribe it. Furthermore, it is important to understand that different user groups have different needs. Some need a workstation for research, while others must have access to operation and maintenance of the same space. A good site master plan incorporates these needs – in full detail,” says Morten G. Hansen.
The overall aim of the site master plan is to conclude the comprehensive restructuring of AGC Biologics’ main offices by 2022 – enabling them to better meet future capacity demands.
